Dear Friends,
We are sure you have been following the news on Russia’s aggression in Georgia
and the atrocities committed by its soldiers. With the active involvement of
the West, the war is hopefully coming to end, but there are several
thousand internally displaced persons (IDPs) dispersed throughout Georgia.
Most of them fled their homes and many of them had been hiding and crawling
through gardens or crop fields for two or three days for survival.
Working with the government of Georgia, several international and local NGOs
are trying to provide shelter, food and medical assistance to the IDPs. However,
given the huge number of IDPs (estimated currently at 100,000) and with more arriving
to Tbilisi every day, the resources of these organizations are not sufficient to meet
the enormous task.
Our NGO ‘Georgia Digital’ has begun assisting groups of IDPs temporarily housed
in Tbilisi schools. These families and individuals now have a roof over their heads,
but have not as yet received humanitarian assistance. They are sleeping on the floor,
they do not have bed sheets or mattresses and have no items of personal hygiene.
One recent arrival is a girl of 12 who has pneumonia; her mom was glad that she was
given one of the few mattresses delivered to the school.
‘Georgia Digital’ has long been implementing a number of programs to connect
children from Georgia and abroad with each other and integrate different ethnicities
through creative activities. As a result of the conflict, many of the children that
took part in our programs have become IDPs, and the teenagers from Tbilisi now
volunteer in distributing assistance. Given the deep crisis situation facing the
IDPs, we are making this emergency appeal.
We have been assisting the IDPs with our own meagre means. Now we are running short
of funds and supplies and urgently ask for your help. Your contribution will be
